Nivalis Nights Fishing Guide: All 24 Fish, Spots & Weather

Fishing feeds your kitchens and pays a little on the side. It is also behind 24 of the game’s 120 achievements, one per species. Only about a quarter of players have caught even the easy three.

Getting started

  1. Get to the Docks. Your boat is there; it costs no rent and takes no damage, only fuel.
  2. Get a rod. Ady, standing past the boat when you come down the ramp from the taxi platform, gives you a free rusty rod. If you missed it, the Stacks sells rods for about 100 lims, and waterfront shops sell better ones.
  3. There is no minigame. Cast, wait for the big bite icon, click. That is it.
  4. Cast at the fish. Look for glowing, surfacing fish (some players describe them as sea-foam green circles) and cast into them. Casting into empty water can mean a very long wait.
  5. Fish from shore or from the boat. Both work. At night you can also hook computer chips, which one player sells to Nabla the Netphreak.

Each fish has its own colour in the fish journal and on the water. If a quest wants a specific fish, match the colour.

Conditions come from the community Fish Guide on Steam (posted October 3). The last column is the share of Steam players who have that fish’s achievement, as of October 4.

Patterns worth knowing:

  • Calypso Island only bites in sunshine. All five of its fish need sunny weather. On a rainy day, go somewhere else.
  • The Stacks covers the most weather. Its six fish between them bite in sun, rain, fog and storm, and Whitefish takes almost anything at night.
  • Industrial District is the rain-and-fog spot, with Ruffe and Rainbow Trout, the two rarest catches.
  • Whitefish has a higher rate (4.1%) than its tier suggests, which hints that a quest points players to it.

Use the fish picker on the home page to filter by where you are, the weather and the time.

Fishing during curfew

The most-shared trick: time stops during curfew. CorpSec has no boats, and there are no cameras on the water. Board your boat before curfew, fish for as long as you like at night, then sleep on the bench in the boat’s cabin and sell the catch in the morning. Players call it cheesy; it works.

Fast-travelling away from your boat leaves it exactly where it was, even out on a fishing spot, which is handy for coming back.

Boat fuel

The boat runs out of fuel. Refuelling stations sit in most waterfront districts. One player found fuel cheaper in Mountain Town (to the right of the Oil Rig when leaving the Docks starter pier) and pricier toward Calypso Island; that is one person’s observation, so check prices as you go.

Selling and cooking fish

  • Vendors pay roughly half the value shown on the fishing screen.
  • Fish spoil quickly. Night-only fish spoil just as fast in a fridge, which players have asked the developers to change. A deep freezer helps, but not much.
  • Changing a recipe changes it at every venue. One player switched every fish dish to Pike, which bites everywhere, to stop chasing rarer species.
  • On days the morning news reports a fish shortage, your own catch is worth the most.

Fishing quests

Several quests send you fishing: the search terms people use include “fish for the first treasure”, “find the second treasure”, and the Seafaring quest (“Seafarer” is unlocked by half of all players). Fishing at treasure spots is also called the fastest early money by some players. Quest steps are on the quests page.
